05.12.2012 “AIDS – four letters – a million lives” awareness event results
The Irkutsk branch of the RRC marked the World AIDS Day by a number of activities. An extensive informational and prevention champagne under the name “AIDS – four letters – a million of lives” started two weeks prior to the World AIDS Day. From Nov. 19 to Nov. 21 trained instructors of the Irkutsk Branch of the Russian Red Cross held informational sessions on HIV prevention for school children and students. These sessions were attended by students of the Medical college and the Irkutsk Pedagogical College.

On Nov. 27-29 traditional “Informational Booths” were open in three Higher Education Institutions of Irklutsk, , i.e. the East Siberian State Academy of Education (Nov. 27), the National Research Irkutsk State Technical University (Nov. 28) and the Irkutsk State Linguistic University (Nov. 29).  At the information booths students could take part in Graffiti contest; receive books and printed materials; write a support note to people affected by HIV/AIDS; take a 3-question test on HIV-infection and in case of a wrong answer get a qualified consultation. All contest winners received prizes. The students received prizes for their participation; and the main incentive for participants over 18 years old was an invitation to the dance party “Live. Love. Dance.” in “Megalopolis” night club on Dec. 1. More than 600 students of 3 Irkutsk higher education institutions visited our information booths.

“Positive handshake” Event took place on Dec. 1, 2012 from 11:30 till 13:00 in Irkutsk, city center. The idea of this event was to collect handshakes from the people in the street. Volunteers from the Irkutsk oblast branch of the RRC went outside wearing two-sided banners. On the front side of the banners there was a question: “If I am a HIV+, would you shake my hand?” The answer on the back side read “HIV is not transmitted via a handshake!” People who dared to shake hands with the volunteers received sweets, while those who refused to do so were asked to read the message on the back side of the banner. They also received information booklets about HIV. During the hour and a half long event the volunteers “collected” 246 handshakes and only 38 “run-aways”.
The highlight of the prevention and information campaign “AIDS –four letters – a million lives” was definitely the dance party “Live. Love. Dance” in “Megalopolis” night club. This event was a good combination of the prevention activity and the youth entertainment. The party program was prepared together with the staff of the night club “Megalopolis”, who made an entertainment scenario and invited the performers. While the informative part of the program and the prizes for the participants were provided by the Irkutsk oblast branch of the RRC. At the entrance all the guests received information booklets and prevention materials. More than 450 young people visited the party.

Irkutsk Branch of the RRC expresses sincere gratitude to the partners who helped to organize the AIDS champagne. We deeply appreciate the help that came from:
